Erika Mata Chávez, Collaboration Facilitator

Erika Mata Chávez is a Mexican American born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her blood carries a bit of Durango from part of her father and a bit of Zacatecas from her mother.

Erika is a first-generation college graduate who graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in 2024 with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a double major in Spanish with a bilingual/TESOL minor. Erika has worked as a work-study student, an educational assistant, and a participant in a year-round teacher residency program offered by the Public Education Department of New Mexico throughout her time in college.

Erika has reached her current position due to the wealth of knowledge and skills she has gained through her professional growth and development. With a strong desire to give back to the community that nurtured her, she is now eager to collaborate with the same community that once provided her and her family with the same level of support and guidance.

Being the oldest child and a first-generation student growing up in a Mexican home, I was often sent to “test the waters.” I am cognizant that our family doesn’t do this on purpose; rather, theyhelp us wherever they can and offer their wisest “échale ganas” advice. Nonetheless, it has led to several experiences that have shaped who I am now. That advice is something I will always remember since it was the most insightful thing my parents could have offered me. I’m confident that serving as a Hacia facilitator will enable me to realize my lifelong goal of having my community reflect on me. My goal is to become a community advocate who encourages people to succeed in life and pursue their passions.
